A user interface for an instrument having more than one selectable function permits access by actuating one of a plurality of functions (310) in which each instrument function includes one or more operational attributes (320) having a corresponding command line for storing an operational setpoint value related to instrument operation. Computer memory is employed for storing such command lines in a matrix relationship such that a keypad (122) including both function keys (310) and operational attribute keys (320) can provide two dimensional access to the command lines in a manner similar to accessing cells in a matrix or spreadsheet. A set of command lines selected by the keys can be displayed (350) with a title and scrolled, and used with further keys (330) and a cursor (360) to enter values. <IMAGE>
