PURPOSE: To obtain a polyamide excellent in heat resistance, mechanical properties and moldability by forming a polyamide from 2,6-bis(aminomethyl) naphthalene and an aliph. dicarboxylic acid in a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION: A polyamide of which 80mol% of repeating units are represented by the formula (wherein R is a 4-20C aliph. alkylene group). The polyamide may contain 20mol% or lower diamine units other than units derived from 2,6-bis(aminomethyl)naphthalene, and pref. has such a mol.wt. that the relative viscosityηrel of the 1g/1dl soln. thereof in 96% conc. sulfuric acid is 1.3-5.0 at 25 deg.C. The copolyamide is useful for fibers, films, injection molding materials, etc., and can be mixed with glass fibers, carbon fibers, talc, mica, etc., or with other polymers according to the application.
