PURPOSE: To provide a method and an apparatus for ink jet recording which can preliminarily discharge from a recording head without reducing a printing velocity. CONSTITUTION: A cap 24 for receiving ink to be discharged from a recording head and a preliminary discharge receiver 26 are provided at least at both sides of the scanning area of the head. When preliminary discharge is instructed during scanning of the head, the position of the heat when the scanning of the head is finished is detected. The distances from detected position to the cap 24 and the receiver are calculated. The receiver (cap 24 or receiver 26) of shorter distance is selected, the head is moved to the position of the selected member, and preliminary discharge is executed. |
