A vehicle seat (1, 3) is proposed, safety elements (9, 11, 21, 23) being arranged in the seat (1, 3) and being automatically moved in the event of a hazard approximately horizontally from their position of rest in the seat (1, 3) into an operative position by means of a device. In the operative position, the safety elements (9, 11, 21, 23) extend as far as components of the vehicle which laterally adjoin the seat (1, 3) and can be formed for example by a further seat (1, 3), a sill beam (13) or a centre pillar (27). The safety elements (9, 11, 21, 23) can preferably be locked to these components in the operative position.
