An air bag safety device mounted in a steering wheel (4) on a telescoping steering shaft (11) supported by a steering column having telescoping sections (20, 21), wherein a movable wall (31) on which the inflation pressure of the bag is exerted is positioned between the steering wheel and a vehicle passenger. Another wall (32) of the bag has a control means for releasing the telescoping sections (20, 21) of the steering column, and the outermost section (21) and the steering shaft (11) supporting the steering wheel (4) together form an assembly which is axially movable in the forward direction of the vehicle, relative to the other, stationary section (21), by the recoil force generated when the air bag (3) is inflated.
