The invention pertains to a synchronizing mechanism for multi-step geared transmissions in motor vehicles. To synchronize the speed of a first shaft bearing the synchronizing mechanism with that of at least one gearwheel (6, 8) or a second shaft, the synchronizing mechanism has a synchronizing body (4) mounted on the first shaft to rotate in unison therewith; a synchronizer sleeve (48) with dog teeth (53) mounted on the synchronizing body (4) to rotate in unison therewith, though axially displaceable thereon; at least one synchronizer hub with dog teeth (10, 12) on the gearwheel (6, 8) or shaft to be engaged, and a friction device (14, 16, 20, 26) and at least one element (18, 24, 36) mounted between synchronizer hub (6, 8) and synchronizing body (4) with friction device and preventing mechanisms to prevent the engagement of synchronizer hub (6, 8) and synchronizer sleeve (48) before the speed synchronization has been effected. The element (18, 24, 36) with friction device (20, 26) mounted between synchronizing body (4) and synchronizer hub (6, 8) has a two-part design, wherein the first component (synchronizer ring (18, 24)) has the friction device (20, 26) as well as first means (22, 28) of the preventing mechanisms (22, 28, 38, 40, 42) and the second component (servo element (36)) has second means (38, 40, 42) of the preventing mechanisms (22, 28, 38, 40, 42) as well as means (54, 55, 58, 60) for boosting a shifting force directed into the synchronizer (2) axially towards the gearwheel to be engaged or the shaft to be engaged, the means (54, 55, 58, 60) cooperating with means (35, 37, 66, 68) on the synchronizing body (4).
