A process is proposed for the production of highly pure hydrotalcites by the reaction of alcohols or alcohol mixtures with at least one or several divalent metals and at least one or several trivalent metals and the hydrolysis of the alcoholate mixture obtained with water. The corresponding metal oxides can be produced by calcining.
