PURPOSE: To provide a slide rheostat having improved abrasion resistance to reduce the electrical sliding noise, free from the troubles of the abrasion of a multi-wire contact sliding on the surface of the slide rheostat in variable resistor, etc., and capable of decreasing the detection error of moved distance. CONSTITUTION: The main component of this slide rheostat 1 is composed of a thermosetting resin 12 and graphite powder 11. The graphite powder 11 is effective for imparting the slide rheostat 1 with electrical conductivity and improving the abrasion resistance of the slide rheostat. The friction coefficient of the surface of the slide rheostat 1 is remarkably decreased by setting the average particle diameter of the graphite powder to <=37μm and the content of the powder to 10-60wt.%.
