PURPOSE: To obtain the subject composition, comprising a specific monofunctional polymerizable chiral monomer and an unpolymerizable nematic liquid crystal compound, capable of regulating its intrinsic pitch within a wide range of temperatures and useful as a liquid crystal display element for watches, desk-top electronic calculators, etc. CONSTITUTION: This composition comprises (A) a monofunctional polymerizable chiral monomer such as an acrylic ester of a cyclic alcohol, a phenol or an aromatic hydroxy compound having at least two six-membered rings, preferably a compound of the formula [six-membered rings A, B and C are each independently benzene ring, pyridine ring, cyclohexane ring, etc.; (n) is an integer of 0 or 1, Y<1> and Y<2> are each independently a single bond, CH2 CH2 , CH2 O, COO, etc.; Y<3> is a single bond, O, COO, OCOO, etc.; R is a 3-18C optically active hydrocarbon group] and (B) an unpolymerizable nematic liquid crystal compound. The composition has 0.5-60μm intrinsic pitch and >=70 deg.C phase transition temperature of a chiral nematic phase isotropic liquid phase.
