A rangefinder for a camera with a zoom lens comprises two lenses 25', 26' each forming an imageon a respective line sensor 27', 28'. Each line sensor has a plurality of light receiving elements. Some of the light receiving elements in each sensor are used as light receiving areas. The light receiving areas are shifted in accordance with the current focal length of the camera lens, the distance between the camera lens and the image forming lenses 25', 26', the camera mode (macro/regular) or to provide a number of measurements which can be assessed for reliability. The size of the areas may be varied in accordance with the image contrast or correlativity. The intensity of the brightest point on each sensor may be compared in order to normalise the output of one sensor. A backlit scene may be detected on the basis of the difference between the maximum and average scene brightness. The outputs of each light receiving element included in the light receiving areas are integrated to produce image data and to determine the range to any object in the field of view.
