PURPOSE: To prevent scratches on the grinding surface of an article to be ground by using sinteredα-alumina as an abrasive, leading to improved particle shape and particle size distribution. CONSTITUTION: An abrasive body is such a one that an abrasive layer is formed on a support body 10. The abrasive layer is mainly composed of an abrasive 21 of a fine powder state and a binder 22, so that the abrasive 21 are dispersed and solidified in the binder 22. As the abrasive 21 of the abrasive layer 20, sinteredα-alumina produced by sintering is used. Regarding the sinteredα-alumina of this abrasive 21, the particle size of primary particles (αcrystal particle) is preferably set to be 0.1 to 10μm, and mean particle size of secondary particles containing flock of theαcrystal is preferably set to be 0.1 to 100μm. The particles size of the sinteredα-alumina is preferably obtained by classifying the particle size by dispersion after dissolving bauxite using canstic soda, removing impurities, precipitating aluminum hydroxide, and concentrating sintering/ dehydrating the obtained aluminium hydroxide.
