PURPOSE: To provide a high carbon steel wire rod to be desceled, excellent in wire drawability. CONSTITUTION: In the steel wire rod prepared by hot rolling and having >=0.6wt.% C content, the true stress-true strain curve in the tensile test is characterized by having 800-1200MPa maximum deformation stress, >=20% total elongation, and >=0.5% yield ratioσ0.2 /σu.t.s. (whereσ0.2 is 0.2% proof stress andσu.t.s. is maximum deformation stress). Further, the maximum height of roughness in the steel-scale interface of the wire rod in the cross section of the wire rod is regulated to <=10μm. By this method, descaling property can be improved to a greater extent than that by the conventional method, and the wire rod to be desceled, as a wire rod of 3-16mmϕafter hot rolling, excellent in wire drawability can be obtained. Moreover, the necessity of an intermediate treatment stage can be obviated, and the reduction of manufacturing costs can be facilitated.
