PURPOSE: To obtain a water holding material for cut flowers, comprising a water absorbing sheet consisting essentially of a polymeric compound comprising a specific recurring unit without adversely affecting flowers or leaves due to the practice of moderate water supply to the cut flowers and elution of water in a small amount, good in keeping quality and suitable for roses, etc. CONSTITUTION: This water holding material for cut flowers comprises a water absorbing sheet (having preferably 30-200μm thickness) consisting essentially of a polymeric compound comprising a recurring unit of formula I [A comprises CH2 CH2 O and CH2 CH(C2 H5 )O and its addition form is formula II (m), (n) and (p) are each a positive number of >=1; the weight ratio 44[(m)+(p)]/72n calculated from the repetitive numbers (m), (n) and (p) is set at (8/2) to (9/1)}; X is a residue of an organic compound having 2 active hydrogen groups; R2 is a compound residue of dicarboxylic acids]. Furthermore, the water absorbing sheet is preferably cross-linked.
