PURPOSE: To obtain a stable print quality regardless of whether toner is replenished or not, in a developing device and method for electrophotographic printer. CONSTITUTION: An adjustable member 16 for a carrying magnetic roll 5 is provided in a developing container 1 between a rotary stirring device 6 and a carrying magnetic roll 5. A gap between the roll 5 and member 16 is automatically adjusted so that it is narrowed during a period of toner replenishment and for a fixed period of time after the finish of the toner replenishment and it is widened at the time except those periods.
