PURPOSE: To provide a fusion splicing method for optical fibers capable of reducing connection loss. CONSTITUTION: This fusion splicing method for the optical fibers has a step of respectively setting the optical fibers 1L, 1R in V-grooves arranging on both sides of joint surfaces 2, a step of moving these optical fibers 1L, 1R along the V-grooves and holding their end faces at a prescribed spacing (2D), a step of measuring the axial centers 3L, 3R of the optical fibers at the joint surfaces 2 from the images 6 near the joint surfaces picked up by a microscopie camera, a step of estimating the loss after connection by calculating the axis misalignment quantity from the difference in the positions of the axial centers, a step of correcting the axis misalignment and a stage for fusion splicing the optical fibers. The step for measuring the axial centers 3L, 3R is a method of determining axial centers 3L, 3R as these centers determined from the reference positions of the respective optical fibers at the joint surfaces 2 by alternately moving the two optical fibers 1L, 1R facing each other to the joint surfaces 2 intersect with the joint surfaces 2. |
