Information distribution to voice servers via local telephone network

The method involves a user calling a common access number. The telephone system detects the geographical zone of the user by detecting the position of the calling telephone. On receiving the position indication, an information file corresponding to the geographical zone is selected. The information contained in the file is transmitted to the user via a reception circuit and is output in audio form. A vocal menu system allows selection of a specific heading, with information concerning the vocal menu displayed on the telephone keypad. The telephone used can be a callpoint radiotelephone operating at short distance from the base unit e.g. 200 metres.
