PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently transmit data between terminals in branch LANs belonging to different trunk LANs. SOLUTION: Transmitted frames of the trunk LANs are converted by series/ parallel converters 23a and 23b into parallel transmitted frames, which are passed through receiving interfaces 26 and stored temporarily in a frame buffer 27; and frame buffer control parts 29-31 decide the transfer destinations of the parallel transmitted frames according to the addresses included in the parallel transmitted frames. When a transfer destination indicates a trunk LAN at a connection destination, the parallel transmitted frames stored temporarily in the frame buffer are read out. Then they are transmitted to the trunk LAN at the connection destination through a transmitting interface 28 and a signal line. Further, parallel transmitted frames received from the trunk LAN at the connection destination through a signal path 18 are converted into series transmitted frames by parallel/serial converters 24a and 24b and they are transmitted to their trunk LAN.
