摘要 <p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve an improved activation process for obtaining a surface conduction type emitter which has a long life, is stable, and provides high efficiency. SOLUTION: A plurality of surface conduction type emitters are electrically connected together in the form of a matrix by (m) rows of wiring and (n) columns of wiring to constitute an electron source 10. The emitters formed are selected per line along the direction of the rows by a switching circuit 6 and are electrically activated by electric pulses from a pulse-generating power supply 4. This activation is achieved by periodic application of both plus and minus electric pulses, so that a reactive current is less than in the case that electric activation is performed by means of pulses of the same polarity, resulting in enhanced electron emission efficiency. Also, the electron source that deteriorates little even after being driven for a long time and is excellent in resistance can be obtained. As a result, a high-grade image display device is obtained.</p>
