PRODUCTION OF 5-PHTHALIMIDO-4-OXOPENTENOIC ACID OR ITS PYRIDINE SLAT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a compound useful as a synthetic raw material for 5- aminolevulinic acid to be an intermediate for producing highly selective herbicides or various chemicals. SOLUTION: N-Furfurylphthalimide is reacted and oxidized with molecular oxygen in the presence of a dye sensitizer (e.g. Rose Bengal) in pyridine or a solvent containing the pyridine while irradiating the reactional mixture with light to afford 5-phthalimido-4-oxopentenoic acid which is the objective compound. The amounts of the respective reagents used are preferably 10<-3> to 10<-4> mol/1 dye sensitizer based on 1l solvent and 2-10ml solvent based on 1mmol N-furfurylphthalimide. The reactional temperature at this time is preferably 0-25 deg.C.
