The device hands over pieces of paper, which are especially base sheets for open packs in a packing machine, from a first or second cylinder (1,2) which is rotated by a drive. Each cylinder has a pincer grab with a controlled, strip-like, pivoting jaw (5), which works together with a jaw (6) which is fixed to the cylinder, and has a controlled sword, which can push a piece of paper into the open grab of the other cylinder. The pivoting jaws on each cylinder have a second control which can be activated as required in order for it to take over the function of the sword, and which disables the control for the pincers movement. The diameters of the cylinders are matched to one another so that each activated grab can work in combination with the activated sword of the other cylinder.
