In North America, the use of the large round bale as a means of handling all types of livestock feed and bedding has become the most popular method. There are howerver, problems in handling an spreading material from these bales due to the weight and size of them. Also, on the Canadian Prairies where below freezing temperature often result in a thick frozen crust of shell on the top of the bale, it is most difficult to brea? up and spread the bale for bedding. As well, the strings used to tie the bale become almost impossible to retrieve as they are frozen to the outer shell and create a problem for the farmer when it comes time to spread the manure, wrapping on the beaters of the manure spreader. But perhaps the greatest problem is the fact that it is extremely hard work to housing barn by hand. The market is lacking in equiptment to process these bales.
