A surgical fixator comprising at least one hollow tube 1 constructed of a bioabsorbable or partially bioabsorbable material. One or more splits are provided in the wall 1a of tube 1 such that, on insertion of a taper pin 3 into the hollow means 4, the tube is radially expansible along its entire length. The splits 2, 2'(5,6,5',6',7,8,9,7',8',9') are divided into three groups such that the first group 2, (5,6,7,8,9) begin at the first end of the tube 1 and the second group 2'(5',6', 7', 8', 9') begin at the second end of the tube 1, the third group (16) lie in the central portion of the tube and do not reach the ends.
