The actuator cylinder (12) end is fixed in the vehicle structure (1). The clutch operating cable (32) passing axially through a dust excluder (33), terminates (64) within the piston centre. The tubular piston (18) slides in a seal at the fixed cylinder end. Hydraulic fluid, entering the annular space round the tube at this end, displaces the piston as the clutch is operated. A coil spring (3) maintains cable tension during release. The piston tube, behind the cable attachment, slides over a helically grooved rotatable, but axially immobile, shaft (54), rotating it as the piston moves axially. A fixed guide tube (72) prevents piston rotation, ensuring the angular displacement of the shaft and its sensor (36,38) accurately represent the piston travel.
