Aqueous effluents containing low concentrations of hydrocarbon pollutants are purified by filtration. Effluent for treatment (5) is sprayed (4) into the top of the filtration vessel (1) and onto a horizontal wall of permeable material (7). This material will absorb practically all the solvents, fats, hydrocarbons and other organic compounds present in the effluent. Purified water is collected in the base of the vessel for discharge into the environment, or recycle.
