The control unit (14) receives coolant temperature signals from a sensor (13) in the piping (8) supplying the main heat exchanger (7), and controls the mixer shutter (17) and distribution shutters (16) through separate actuators (18,15). The former controls the proportion of external air (12) supplied to the exchanger; the latter adjusts the relative flows of cool and hot air. The unit also controls the speed of the fan (11) delivering cooled air through the refrigerant evaporator (10), to be added to the inflow (3) to a distribution unit (2) connected to the various outlets. While the engine is warming up, the control unit closes off the fresh air supply (12,17), and the system recycles the passenger compartment air.
