TRANSMITTING METHOD AND RECEIVER FOR A PLURALITY OF DIGITAL SIGNAL AND STATISTICAL MULTIPLEXING DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a statistic multiplex system with superior picture quality without variation by adjusting the bit rate assigning distribution in accordance with difference between actual picture quality and storage picture quality in order to permit the difference of them to be equal in whole channels. SOLUTION: Respective transmission channels are provided with digital encoders 30...30m. The respective encoders have a variable bit rate capable of adjusting actual picture quality in the channel and also is provided with a means for transmitting a picture quality signal to a multiplexer(MUX) 32. Expected target picture quality is obtained by being controlled by a multiplex control computer 34. MUX 32 multiplexes digital signals from the respective encoders and controls the operations of the encoders by a network 40. MUX also adjusts the bit rate so as to permit actual picture quality by the encoders to come close to target picture quality. When statistic multiplexing is completed, the output signal of MUX is modulated by a modulator 36 and transmitted to a remote receiver 38.
