The method uses guidance equipment comprising calculator (16), a vehicle localisation module (11), a data base memory (12), controls (13,14) and a guidance display (15), and the guidance includes three phases which are from departure to principal road network, across road network and from road network to destination. During the initial phase the guidance indicates the course and distance as the crow flies to the road network intersection. While driving across the principal network information is given on negotiating crossroads so that an optimised route is followed. During the last phase from principal network to destination the course and distance as the crow flies to the destination is given.
