PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a luminescent element which is capable of high-luminance light emission even at a low current and stable by introducing an aromatic compound having a six-membered ring structure and at least three nitrogen atoms into between a positive and negative electrodes. SOLUTION: In a luminescent element having a structure containing a positive electrode and a negative electrode and a multilayer laminated structure containing a hole transport layer/electron transfer layer, a luminescent layer/electron transport layer or a monolayer structure made of a mixture containing a luminescent material and an electron transport material and/or a hole transport material and emitting light chiefly by a direct current or optionally electric energy such as a pulse current or an alternating current, an aromatic compound having at least one six-membered ring structure and at least three nitrogen atoms in the molecule and represented by the formula (wherein at east one of R<1> to R<4> is an aromatic substituent; and the number of nitrogen atoms of R<1> to R<4> is at least 1) is vapor-deposited by the vacuum deposition method on the electron transfer layer sandwiched between the positive electrode being ITO glass of a transparent electrode of a substrate having a resistance as low as 20Ωand the negative electrode made of a metal or an alloy such as a low-work- function metal, a noble metal, a rare earth metal, to obtain an organic EL element.
