The rotary element (1) carries an electric conductor (14) separated from the fixed printed circuit (0) by an earth plane (2). The earth plane has windows (20E,21C,24A) arranged along five concentric arcs about the axis of rotation (13). The circuit (3) has corresponding concentric arcuate tracks (30-34). The conductor is energised a wire (17) and a spiral spring (16) connected to a signal generator. When the conductor is opposite a window, the corresponding track receives the signal by contactless transmission. The windows are staggered so that the distribution of the signal among the five tracks denotes the angular position of the rotor, unambiguously.
