PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to heavily slice a cross grain material by moving a knife in a plane substantially perpendicular to the ground surface, and cutting a timber. SOLUTION: The vertical slicer (a) drives a knife 2 by a driving means in a plane substantially perpendicular to the ground surface and cuts a veneer from a flitch 7. The flitch 1 is fixed to a flitch holder 8 at an angle A to the knife 2, the holder 8 is guided reciprocatingly to a flitch guide 9 having the guide oblique surface of an angle B (BΕA) in the same bias direction as the angle A to the knife 2, and oppositely driven to the drive of the knife 2 by the driving means.
