The valve is operated by an explosive charge (15), which, when ignited, drives a cutting blade (13) mounted on a piston (14) in a cylinder in the valve body (11), so that the blade (13) cuts through a wire (20) located in a through hole (17) at right angles to the blade (13), and the blade comes to rest in contact with a valve seat (27) so that the through hole (17) of the valve is sealed. The material of the blade (13) is less hard than that of the wire (20), and the type and quantity of the explosive charge (15) are selected to ensure that the blade (23) reaches a speed of more than 40 m/s before contacting the wire (20).
