In an electric toothbrush, a bristle carrier (7) is mounted in a slide (10) which can move in a straight line but not rotate in the housing of a plug-in brush. A toothbrush axial extension (6) can not move in the axial direction but is secured to the slide (10) so as to rotate and has a radial projection (17) that engages a recess (18) in the bristle carrier (7). The sliding movement of the toothbrush axial extension (6) causes a corresponding sliding movement of the slide (10) with the bristle carrier (7). A swivelling movement of the toothbrush axial extension (6) causes a rotary oscillation of the bristle carrier (7) due to the engagement of the radial projection (17) in the recess (18).
