Electric motors (14,15) at each driven wheel (12,13) are battery-fed (16) via controllers (14a,15a). An overall controller (18) implements the driver's commands, controls the IC engine (18c,17) and the clutch (18d,17a) connecting it to the differential (11), and receives signals (18a,18f) from speed (19) and battery state sensors. In towns only electric traction is used. Sustained operation at speeds over, e.g. 50 km/h starts, and connects in (17a), the engine. No gearbox is needed. Prime movers contribute torque in proportions determined by power demand and battery state of charge. If necessary, the motors, running as generators, feed the battery through a charger (16a), and similarly for regenerative braking. Off-road, the charger plugs in (16b) to a mains outlet. A variant employs a third motor. |
