A sample is prepared for x-ray fluorescence analysis to allow quantified determination of elements in volatile fluids e.g. water, by depositing onto a carrier (3) and drying using a heater. An x-ray source excites fluorescence, which is measured with a spectroscopic detector (6). A very thin flexible polymer film is used to carry the sample,a nd is especially polyethylene terephthalate 0.3-10 mu m thick. The film passes over a hot plate with a recess. Reduced pressure in the recess conforms the film, just below the point of sample deposition. Also claimed is the equipment, which includes a pipetting unit over the hot plate. The sample carrier tape is wound between a pair of spools (7), passing the stations described, including the x-ray source (5) and detector (6). The hotplate (4) has a recess with fine holes, to which a vacuum pump is connected.
