An elastic material (2) has a layer (3) of fibres (4) attached to at least one of its faces to control its direction of stretch. The fibres are produced by a 'Spunlace' (RTM) technique and can be of a natural material of vegetable, animal or mineral origin, such as cotton, silk, linen or wool, or they can be of a synthetic material such as polyester, polyamide, polypropylene, rayon or viscose. The elastic material (2) can be a vulcanisable elastomer, with the fibres attached to it by vulcanisation, or it can be a thermoplastic elastomer, with the fibres attached to it by hot pressing.
