摘要 In traditional roundwood scaling methods a truck load of wood is measured by physically measuring the length, width and height of the truck. Then the scaler calculates the area of the measured load. After deductions for loose piling, defects etc. the area or volume is converted to dimensions such as cords or cubic meters morecommonly known in the industry. There is continuously a battle by companies to determine how much fibre they are buying fibre. For instance a truck load of small diameter wood has much less solid wood fibre then a truck load of large diameterwood. Off loading a truck and measuring each piece of wood is to expensive so averaging is the norm with factors for converting stacked volumes to solid volumes. In this invention, called digital remote scaling (DRS), digital cameras, computers and existing or customized software are combined to help solve these problems. The scaler sits in an office where digital camera's supply images of the truck(i.e. sides and top) to a computer screen. The cameras are located at pre determined distances from the truck. The truck stops in the same position each time. With some calibration the image on the computer screen can be scaled exactly to the actual size of the truck. Standard software or custom software can measure the area of wood on the truck. From that point an average section can be selected by the scaler and the size of each piece of wood measured very easily on the computer screen or the image can be printed in colour or grayscale and measured. This will provide speed with accuracy of scaling and particularly speed with accuracy of solid wood content unheard of in the industry. These digital images provide picture records that can be used to compare tree size to cutting areas and manipulated to consider other factors of interest to companies. One of the most important factors is that it will cut scaling costs subtaintially and provide accurate estimates for total solid inventories in sawmills and paper companies. As well as economically retaining records of deliveries.
