PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a navigator to be mounted on an automobile including a road type determination means for determining and instructing on which road the automobile is traveling to a position detection checking part even if highways and ordinary roads similar in direction and position shape exist. SOLUTION: When highways and ordinary roads similar in direction and position shape exist and a conventional position detection checking part cannot determine on which road an automobile is traveling, an azimuth sensor 20 senses an azimuth of the automobile for sending an azimuth signal, to an azimuth change amount calculator 21, which calculates an amount of change in the azimuth signal for sending a signal of an azimuth change amount to a road type determiner 22. The road type determiner 22 determines that the automobile is traveling on a highway when the azimuth change amount is at a certain value or less. The determination result is sent to the position detection checking part 3, which can determine a road on which the automobile is traveling even if highways and ordinary roads similar in direction and position shape exist.
