PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composite material excellent in moldability and heat resistance, slight in reduction in mechanical properties with time in a temperature range from a room temperature to a high temperature in the atmospheric pressure, comprising plural inorganic fibers as a reinforcing material and a specific glass ceramic as a matrix. SOLUTION: This composite material comprises plural inorganic fibers as a reinforcing material and a glass ceramic as a matrix containing >=30wt.% in the whole glass ceramic of an aggregate of a celsian crystal substantially composed of Si, Al, O and Sr, in which a part of Sr is optionally replaced with Ba. Preferably the glass ceramic is mixed with a melting improver (e.g. CaO) or a nucleus forming agent (e.g. ZrO2 ) or a clarifier (e.g. As2 O3 ). The inorganic fibers are substantially a crystalline aggregate ofβ-SiC having <=1,000nm average size and have an average element composition of 65-75wt.% of Si, 25-35wt.% of C, 0-1wt.% of O and 0-10wt.% of B.
