PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrostatic charger in which an ozonless non-contact electrostatic charging system is introduced, capable of efficiently forming an electrical field for sticking ion generated by an electromagnetic wave to an electrostatic latent image carrier and capable of accomplishing electrostatic charging with less unevenness in electrostatic charging. SOLUTION: The charger is provided with an electromagnetic wave irradiation device 1 and an electrical field forming means, and by emitting the electromagnetic wave toward a space above the electrostatic latent image carrier 2 by the device 1 and forming the electrical field by the electrical field forming means, the electrostatic latent image carrier 2 is electrostatically charged up to a desired potential. In this case, a grid electrode 6 is installed between the electromagnetic wave irradiation device 1 and the electrostatic latent image carrier 2, then, a bias VG is impressed on the grid electrode 6, a bias VI is impressed on a surface (of an electrode 5) facing to the electrostatic latent image carrier 2 of the device 1 and a bias VB is impressed on the rear electrode 3 of the electrostatic latent image carrier 2. Thus, the electrical field for sticking the ion generated by the electromagnetic wave to the electrostatic latent image carrier 2 is efficiently formed in the space. |
