A sand and earth bank is positioned behind the target positions into which the bullets penetrate and are retained at different depths dependent upon the bank structure. The lead is stored in the bank and gradually leaching occurs of white lead, lead carbonate and different sulphates, which are followed by leach water for diffusion in the water flow around the firing range. With repeated firing, the main part of the bullets hits the bank within a circular area of 20-30 cm in diameter. Within this area the concentration of lead remains very high. At the same time, a powerful mechanical wear of the bank occurs. |
