The windscreen wiper has an arm (12) which is articulated in a drive head (16) around an axis (A1) parallel to a screen to be washed. The arm placed a wiper blade against the screen under spring bias (20) between the arm and drive head. The arm has a lug (26) which co-operates with a ramp (28) fixed to the vehicle body to cause pivoting of the arm around its axis on the drive head in a lifting direction for the wiper with respect to the glass when the wiper is in a rest position. The lifting surface (34) of the ramp (28) has a boss (36) on which the lug is displaced when the wiper moves from its rest position to cause pivoting of the wiper in the lifting direction greater than the corresponding pivoting to the rest position of the wiper.
