A gas sensor has a sensor element (12) secured in a gas-tight manner in a metallic housing (11). The gas sensor has a double-walled protective tube (30) with an outer protective sleeve (31) and an inner protective sleeve (32) with gas inlet and/or outlet openings. The inner protective sleeve (32) forms a gas measurement chamber (34) in which the sensor element (12) penetrates with a section (13) at the exhaust gas side. The outer protective sleeve (31) and the inner protective sleeve (32) are designed in a single piece.
