The machine has an interceptor (7) for a portion (3) of the projected rays (1) to form, on the projection screen (2) in the area of the projected image, a shadow zone (5) onto which the subtitles are projected. The interceptor can have a flap (8) pivotally mounted on a fixed support for movement between a position out of the rays and at least one position in which it penetrates into the rays to a depth predetermined to close off the rays in the zone which it occupies. The flap can be formed from two sub flaps (13,14) on a common axis.
