The device has a first means for detecting the non-engagement of a tongue in an associated belt lock and second means (4) which measure the length of the belt unrolled from the belt roller (2) and signal when the measured belt length does not exceed a predeterminable ideal value. The ideal value for the extended belt length corresponds to a minimum length required to effectively belt up an occupant. The means for measuring the extended belt length count the number of revolutions of the belt roller.
