[Class 98 (ii)] A silver halide emulsion is developed in the presence of an arylimidazole of the general formula #R #<NS># CH ; in which R is a benzene or polynuclear ring residue substituted by a halogen atom or an alkyl group or both, or a residue of an unsubstituted polynuclear ring system. The arylimidazole may be added to the developer or may be incorporated during the preparation of the light-sensitive material in an intermediate layer, a backing or a coating on the emulsion ; for photographic paper, it may be incorporated in the paper pulp, baryta coating or sizing agent or in the finished paper. It may also be incorporated in exposed material, by bathing, prior to development. Development may be conducted at raised temperatures, e.g. 20-70‹ C. Specified arylimidazoles are 6-chloro-, 5-chloro-6-methyl, 4.6- and 5.6- dichloro-, 4.6-dibromo-, and 5-iodo-benzimidazoles; 1.2-naphthimidazole; 1:2-anthrimidazole, and 4.5-acenaphthimidazole. Specification 403,789 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to substituents comprising an alkoxy or aryloxy group.
