A novel application is described of N-oxide polymers of high molecular weight such as flocculants and the process of obtaining the same. The flocculation is useful in the classification process of portable waters and of industrial origin, mineral process, paper fabrication, sugar processes and sludge dehydration processes. It was surprisingly found that the introduction of N-oxides in molecules of certain polymeric materials acquire characteristics that allow to use them as flocculants presenting a very good particle separation with more stable flocs. The method of obtaining the ionic polymers, N-oxides are characterized by the monomer polymerization process realized in mass and the oxidation is carried out by dissolving the polymer in acetic acid (30g of polymer in 300 ml of acetic acid), adding hydrogen peroxide in molar relation 1.1 for monomeric unity after 3 hours of reaction 30 of excess peroxide is added, the oxidation is carried out at 70 degree C for 18 hours of constant mixing; finally eliminating the acid in a rotavapor, the material is washed various times dissolving the de-ionized water and eliminating the excess in the rotavapor until a pH of 4 in the polymer solution is reached.
