<p>A variable valve timing device includes a rotatable shaft (30,10a) for controlling the valve opening and closing of an engine, a rotation transmitting member (50,60,70,11a) rotatably mounted on the rotatable shaft, a vane (32) connected to one of the rotatable shaft and the rotation transmitting member, a chamber (R0) defined between the rotatable shaft and the rotation transmitting member and divided into a first pressure chamber (R1) and a second pressure chamber (R2) by the vane, a first fluid passage (15,16,32) being in fluid communication with the first pressure chamber for supplying and discharging the fluid therein and therefrom, respectively, a second fluid passage (17,18,40a,33) being in fluid communication with the second pressure chamber for supplying and discharging the fluid therein and therefrom, a retracting hole (72) which is formed on one of the rotatable shaft and the rotation transmitting member, a locking pin (90) slidably fitted in the retracting hole and urged towards the other of the rotatable shaft and the rotation transmitting member, a receiving hole (31) which is formed on the other of the rotatable shaft and the rotation transmitting member and in which a part of the locking pin is fitted when the relative phase between the rotatable shaft and the rotation transmitting member is a predetermined phase and a third fluid passage (34) being in fluid communication with the receiving hole only when the relative phase between the rotatable shaft and the rotation transmitting member is the predetermined phase. <IMAGE></p> |
