PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable the reaction in a noncorrosive environment and avoid the deterioration in catalyst activity by bringing an aromatic compound and a carboxylic acid, etc., into contact with a catalyst containing a zeolite in the presence of carbon dioxide in the reaction of the aromatic compound with the carboxylic acid, etc. SOLUTION: An aromatic compound (benzene, etc.) and a carboxylic acid or its derivative (acetic acid, acetyl chloride, etc.) are brought into contact with a catalyst containing a zeolite in the presence of carbon dioxide when reacting the aromatic compound with the carboxylic acid or its derivative. A pentasil type, a beta type, a faujasite type, mordenite type, etc., are cited as the zeolite and a proton, etc., are preferred as the cation. The zeolite is used in an amount of preferably about 1-50 wt.% based on the total amount of the organic substances at the time of the hatch operation and preferably about 0.1-5 hr<-1> expressed in terms of feed weight ratio per hr of the organic substances at the time of the continuous operation. The amount of the present carbon dioxide is preferably about >=5×10<-3> mol/mol based on the feed raw material. The reaction is carried out in the liquid phase.
