PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the coding/decoding method and device by which a data string resulting from a multi-value image is subject to level plane expansion and a data string mixed with image data and attribute data is coded/decoded efficiently. SOLUTION: A shift register 43 stores input data 31 by 3 lines. The input data 31 are data, e.g. where image data and attribute data are mixed. A template extract section 44 according to a template to reference only the image data and a template extract section 45 according to a template to reference only the attribute data reference data in the shift register 43 to generate a context. A control section 48 provides an output of a control signal 49 depending on whether the input data 31 are the image data or the attribute data, a context selection section 47 selects the template extract section 44 or 45 depending on the control signal 49 and provides an output of a context 3 to a predict section 4.
