PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make speed of response high and to obtain a large deflection angle at low driving voltage by making the apex angle and the maximum refractive index variation of a prism part related to an electro-optic prism array and those of a prism part related to an electro-optic deflecting element to satisfy a specified condition. SOLUTION: This optical deflector is constituted of the electrooptic prism array A and the electro-optic deflecting element B. The prism array A is provided with the triangle electrode 12a of the prism array on the upper surface (+Z surface) of an optical substrate having an electro-optic effect, and the element B is provided with the triangle electrode 12b on the +Z surface of the optical substrate having the electro-optic effect. The apex angleαa and the maximum refractive index variationΔna(max) , of the prism part related to the prism array A and the apex angle X. and the maximum refractive index variationΔnb(max) of the prism part related to the element B satisfy an expression (Δna(max) tanαa )/(Δnb(max) tanαb )>1.
